5 Signs It's Time to Change Your Locks

Protect your family

Your home locks are quite literally your first line of defense against intruders. They protect your family, your possessions, and your peace of mind. Yet many homeowners do not think about their locks until something goes wrong — a break-in, a lockout, or a key that simply stops working. Here are five clear signs that it is time to take action and upgrade your home security.

1. You Just Moved Into a New Home

This is the single most important reason to change your locks, and it is the one most often overlooked. When you move into a new home — whether you purchased it or are renting — you have absolutely no idea how many copies of the existing keys are floating around. Previous owners may have given keys to family members, neighbors, pet sitters, house cleaners, contractors, delivery services, real estate agents, and former tenants. Any one of those people could still have a working copy.

The solution is simple: have all exterior locks rekeyed or replaced within the first week of moving in. Rekeying changes the internal pin configuration so that all old keys stop working, while you get a fresh set of new keys. It is typically less expensive than replacing the entire lock hardware, and it gives you complete peace of mind that you are the only one with access to your home.

2. Your Lock Is Difficult to Operate

If you find yourself having to jiggle, force, wiggle, or repeatedly insert and remove your key to get your lock to turn, that is a clear sign of internal wear. Lock mechanisms contain small pins, springs, and cylinders that wear down over time through regular use and exposure to weather. A worn lock is not just inconvenient — it is a security vulnerability. Worn locks are significantly easier to pick, bump, or force open. They may also fail unexpectedly, potentially locking you out of your own home at the worst possible time.

If your lock requires any extra effort to operate, do not ignore it. Have it replaced before it becomes an emergency. A proactive lock replacement costs a fraction of what an emergency lockout call costs.

3. You Have Had a Break-In or Attempted Break-In

If your home has been broken into, all exterior locks should be replaced immediately — even locks on doors that were not used for entry. Intruders may have obtained keys or gained knowledge about your lock types during the break-in. Additionally, if you notice any signs of tampering around a lock — scratch marks on the keyhole, dents in the lock body, a loose or damaged strike plate, pry marks on the door frame, or a deadbolt that no longer aligns properly — these indicate an attempted break-in and mean your lock has been compromised.

Even if a tampered lock still appears to work normally, its internal mechanism may have been weakened. Replace it immediately and consider upgrading to a higher-security deadbolt with anti-pick, anti-bump, and anti-drill features.

4. You Have Given Out Too Many Keys

Over the years, house keys tend to multiply. You hand out copies to house sitters, dog walkers, contractors, cleaning services, family members, friends, and neighbors. Maybe you hid one under a doormat or inside a fake rock (both of which burglars check first, by the way). If you have lost track of exactly how many copies of your key exist and who has them, it is time to rekey.

Rekeying is the most cost-effective solution here. Your locksmith changes the internal pins of your existing lock hardware so that every old key immediately stops working. You receive new keys, and you start fresh with full control over who has access. For a typical home with 2-3 exterior doors, rekeying takes about 30 minutes and costs significantly less than full lock replacement.

5. Your Locks Are Outdated

Lock technology has improved dramatically over the past decade. If your locks are more than 10 years old, they likely lack modern security features that are now standard in mid-range and high-end residential locks. These features include bump-proof pins (which prevent a common forced-entry technique), reinforced strike plates with 3-inch screws (which resist kick-in attacks), anti-drill plates, smart lock integration with keypad or smartphone entry, and auto-locking mechanisms.

Upgrading does not have to break the bank. Even a mid-range deadbolt with bump-proof pins and a reinforced strike plate provides dramatically better protection than an older standard deadbolt. And if you are interested in smart home integration, modern keypad and Bluetooth locks offer convenience features like auto-lock, guest codes, and activity logs — all without sacrificing security.
